How to Create an Online Store

October 11th, 2011 Comments off

With the internet as a major and far reaching as it is today everyone has to start thinking about having a sort of online presence to compete with the change in method of buying and selling. In order to create an online store there are several steps you need to keep in mind and you should be able to start bringing in the sale of the whole country and maybe even the world if you’re interested in that.

1. Come up with a name. If you’ve wanted to create an online store chances are good that you already have a name for your shop’s name but is it good? A name to remember and immediately tell your customers what you are and what you sell. With brick and mortar store you can afford a bit of mystery because people are more likely to wander out of sheer curiosity. With the internet is all about instant gratification though users tend to get frustrated and just a click, why try to figure out your store when they can go to one that gives them what they need? To create an online store is to create an online presence, and become the most effective users need to know what that stands for the existence and capable of doing.

2. Choose your product. Now that you have chosen the name you should find out what you will sell once you create an online store. There are many different options in this step because you can sell things you make or other things that are made. You personally may have a product or go through a drop shipper that handles all shipping and products. In my experience the most successful online stores are those that offer something unique to the user base, a good product unique or highly sought after. When you create an online store you have to go to this place at the top of the last and has a plan for how you will get your product and how much you plan to sell them for, this will make the process go along much smoother.

3. Drawings of the design, colors, etc. Just as important as your name is your design and color palette. A store with a palette that is very muddy or too busy to bomb even if you have the coolest name world. Think of this in terms of a real life store again. If you go to the store and immediately bombarded with bright colors and flashing lights, unless you’re in Las Vegas you probably will not stay around. You should keep this in mind when you create an online store like you no longer have the physical act of entering the store is a purely visual experience. You want to try to stick with all the muted pastel colors or all saturated colors vibrant. With the computer monitor across the nation displaying different information that you need to create a cohesive design your colors as possible so it looks as similar as possible from one monitor to the next so you have some sort of quality control on what the viewer is seeing.

4. Choose a hosting service. This is an important step in the process to create an online store as this can make or break your success. You must choose a hosting company that best suits you and your needs. Most E-Commerce solutions offer a wide range of hosting packages and amenities that are different from each package so make sure you do your research. One thing to always remember is whether or not they are fun to work with because if your site should be down for any reason or you want to make changes you can not find out for yourself, you will need to call them. So I suggest before choosing one to make sure you have to call all potential providers and talk to them. If they are friendly and informative I move them to the top of the list, but if you get to walk around on the phone or never actually talk to a real person I would move to the bottom of the list. The hosting provider is basically your partner when you create an online store and you need to make sure that your partner will be there for you and has your best interests at heart.
